Joyeux Noël! Au départ, je pensais écrire cet article dimanche, le jour de Noël mais mon weekend chez mes amis s'est prolongé jusqu'à hier soir! J'ai donc beaucoup de choses à vous raconter! Samedi, le 24 décembre, j'ai fait des crêpes pour les partager avec mes amis qui m'avaient invitée à passer Noël avec eux car ils savaient que je ne rentrais pas en France et que je serais toute seule. Ils habitent à Cranston, à environ 10 minutes de Providence. Chez eux, on a cuisiné une bûche de Noël juste avant d'aller à la Veillée de Noël à l'église. C'était la première fois que j'y voyais autant de monde! Dans une église baptiste, il y a vraiment beaucoup de chants et la chorale était vraiment très motivée et ils chantent tous tellement bien! Il y avait même un orchestre avec des violonistes et un violoncelle. Entre chaque chant, une personne lisait un passage de la Bible pendant qu'une autre personne allumait un des cierges de l'Avent. Et puis après le sermon, ils ont chanté la chanson "Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia"! C'était la première fois que je l'attendais en entier en dehors du contexte d'un film stupide. Et pour terminer, il y a eu un chant où tout le monde devait faire sonner des petites cloches que l'on nous avait données à l'entrée de l'église. C'était amusant! Le seul bémol, c'est qu'à un moment il a fallu allumer des bougies mais comme le bâtiment est en bois, les bougies étaient en plastique et il fallait juste appuyer sur un bouton pour avoir de la lumière. Mon amie Angela n'aimait pas trop. Après le service, nous sommes allés admirer quelques maisons décorées dans Providence et puis à Cranston. Certaines maisons étaient vraiment impressionantes! Il y a des gens qui prennent cela très au sérieux!
Merry Christmas! At first, I wanted to post this article on December 25 but my weekend with my friends lasted longer than I expected and I only came home last night! I have a lot of things to tell you! Last Saturday, December 24, I made some crêpes to share with my friends who had invited me to spend Christmas with them when they learned that I wasn't going back to France and that I would be by myself. They live in Cranston, about 10 minutes away from Providence. Before going to the Christmas Eve service at church, we baked a Yule Log for Christmas dinner. It was the first time I'd seen so many people at church and the service was of course kind of different from what I'm used to, but it was great. There was a lot of singing involved and the choir was amazing. They even had a small orchestra with violins. Between each hymn, someone would read a passage of the Bible and someone else would light up one of the Avent candles. And after the pastor's sermon, they sang the "Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah" hymn. It was the first time I'd heard it outside of a stupid movie. It was great! To finish, there was a song during which everybody had to ring little bells that they gave us when we entered the church. It was fun. The only bad thing was that at one point, we had to light up candles but since the church is a wooden building, the candles were fake. My friend Angela didn't like it at all! After church, we drove around Providence and Cranston to look at the decorations on some houses. Some of them were really impressive. People really go out of their way to decorate their house for Christmas!
Après l'église, nous n'avons pas eu un réveillon de Noël comme l'on pourrait avoir en France. Nous avons mangé du fromage avec des crackers (en forme de papillon!) et des cookies. Ensuite, nous avons ouvert quelques cadeaux après une séance photo devant le sapin. Et devinez ce que j'ai eu? Des Petits Ecoliers de LU! C'était vraiment très gentil de leur part de s'être souvenus que c'étaient des biscuits français que j'aime beaucoup. J'étais très, très contente! J'ai aussi eu de très jolies boucles d'oreilles et du rouge à lèvres. J'ai offert un châle à Angela et à sa mère et j'étais aussi très contente de voir que ça leur plaisait beaucoup. Et puis il a fallu aller se coucher parce que le matin de Noël, j'ai dû me lever tôt pour pouvoir Skyper avec toute ma famille. Ca m'a fait très plaisir de pouvoir parler avec mes grand-parents, avec mes oncles, mes tantes et mes cousins. Mais comme Angela et Steve étaient avec moi, je me suis emmêlée les pinceaux avec les traductions à la fin! Je ne savais plus à qui je devais parler français et à qui je devais parler anglais! Ils ont trouvé ma famille très gentille et très drôle et ils leur tardent de rencontrer mes parents quand ils vont venir me rendre visite en Mai. Après cette longue session de vidéo-chat familiale, nous avons terminé la bûche de Noël avec la crème au chocolat. Nous n'avions pas grand-chose pour la décorer mais nous avons mis des noix et des bonbons en forme de fraises sur le dessus et au final, elle était bien jolie notre bûche! Et j'allais oublié! Il a neigé! Pendant 5 minutes!
After church, we didn't have a big feast like I'm used to in France. We ate some cheese and crackers (butterfly crackers!) and some cookies. Then, we opened a couple of presents after we took some pictures in front of the Christmas tree. Guess what kind of present I got? French biscuits called "Petits Ecoliers"! It was very nice of them to remember that I really like these biscuits. I was very, very happy! I also got a really nice pair of earrings and some lipstick. I gave a shawl to Angela and her mom and they really loved them so I was happy about this, too. When we were done with the presents, we had to go to bed because on December 25, I had to wake up early in order to Skype with my whole family. Most of them had gathered at my parents' house and it was a good Christmas present to be able to talk to my grandparents, to my uncles, aunts and even my cousins. But since Angela and Steve were with me, I got confused with the translations by the end. I didn't know to whom I should speak French and to whom I had to speak in English! They said my family was very nice and funny and they cannot wait to meet my parents when they'll come visit in May. After this long video-chatting session, we melted chocolate to cover our Yule log. We didn't really know how to decorate it so we put some nuts and candies on top of it and it looked great! And I almost forgot! It snowed! For five minutes!
En début d'après-midi, les parents de Steve sont arrivés du Kansas, où ils habitent. Encore une fois, nous n'avons pas eu un déjeuner de Noël comme ceux auxquels je suis habituée. Nous avons mangé les crêpes que j'avais faites la veille avec de la confiture mais aussi avec des asperges et de la sauce alfredo. Et beaucoup de chocolat! Nous avons mangé beaucoup de chocolat! Angela a eu un iPad pour Noël et Steve a montré l'application Angry Birds à sa mère. Résultat? Elle et moi, nous avons passé presque deux heures à y jouer! Nous avons tellement joué que nous avons terminé le jeu et il a fallut télécharger une nouvelle application! Je n'avais jamais utilisé un iPad avant, mais je dois avouer que c'est vraiment génial! On a téléchargé quelques eBooks (même si je n'aime pas parce que je préfère les vrais livres) et nous avons regardé des vidéos sur l'application de CNN. Le vrai repas de Noël a eu lieu le soir du 25 décembre quand le frère et la belle-soeur d'Angela nous ont rejoint. Pour dîner, nous avons eu de la purée de pommes de terre, du poulet aux herbes et au citron qui était absolument délicieux! Il y avait aussi une casserolle d'haricots verts comme nous avions eu chez Mary pour Thanksgiving et nous avons aussi mangé du riz. Et pour le dessert, des brownies, des blondies et la bûche de Noël. Comme il n'y avait pas de place dans le réfrigérateur, nous l'avions mise dans la voiture, à l'extérieur. Il faisait bien froid dimanche et...la bûche, elle a un peu gelée. Donc j'ai dû la réchauffer devant la cheminée!

In the early afternoon, Steve's parents arrived from Kansas, where they live. Once again, we didn't have a Christmas lunch like the ones I'm used to. We ate the crêpes I made the day before with some jam but also with asparagus and alfredo sauce. And chocolate! A lot of chocolate! Angela got an iPad for Christmas and Steve decided to show the Angry Birds app to his mother. In the end, she and I, we spent more than two hours playing this game! We played so much that we actually finished it and we had to download another app! I had never used an iPad before but I have to admit that it's a very nice piece of technology. We downloaded a couple of eBooks (even if I don't like them because I like real books better), and we watched videos on the CNN app. The real Christmas dinner occured in the evening when Angela's brother and sister-in-law joined us. We had mashed potatoes, a really delicious herb and lemon chicken, a green bean casserolle like the one I had at Thanksgiving, and some rice. For dessert, we had brownies, blondies and the Yule log. Since we didn't have room in the fridge for the log, we had put in the car, outside. It was rather cold on Sunday and as a result, the log froze! I had to warm it up in front of the fire!
Le 26, nous sommes tous allés faire un peu de shopping à un grand mall près de Cranston qui s'appelle Warwick Mall. Il y avait beaucoup de monde qui échangeaient les vêtements qui n'étaient pas à leur taille. Et puis, il y a aussi beaucoup de soldes le jour après Noël, pour aider l'économie apparemment. Avec Angela, nous sommes aussi allées au centre-commercial dans Providence. Elle adore les ornements pour les sapins de Noël et ils étaient aussi en solde donc nous en avons acheté plusieurs. Et le temps passe vite dans un centre-commercial, même quand il y a du monde partout! J'avais pris mes sacs pour rentrer à la maison ensuite parce que nous étions dans Providence mais au final, je suis retournée à Cranston avec Angela et Steve! Si j'étais rentrée à l'apartement, je n'aurais rien fait et ils ont pensé que c'était mieux que je reste avec eux un peu plus. C'est vrai que c'est mieux quand même! Le lendemain, donc hier, nous avons eu un nouveau repas de Noël mais cette fois-ci, c'est la maman d'Angela qui a fait la cuisine et donc nous avons mangé de la nourriture typique du Bangladesh. Les currys étaient délicieux, surtout le curry aux oeufs, dont je n'avais jamais entendu parlé. Et après le dîner hier soir, je suis finalement rentrée à la maison avec Chloé, l'assistante qui travaille dans le Connecticut et qui va rester quelques jours à Providence!
On the 26, we all went to do some shopping at a mall near Cranston called Warwick Mall. There was a lot of people exchanging clothes that didn't fit. But then again, there are a lot of sales the day after Christmas to boost the economy or whatever. With Angela, we also went to the mall in Providence. She loves Christmas tree ornaments so we bought some of them because they had sales on them, too. And I have to say that time flies when you're in a mall, even when it's as crowded as it was on Monday. I had taken my bags with me to go back home since we were in Providence, but I ended up going back to Cranston with Angela and Steve. If I had gone back to the appartment, I wouldn't have done anything so they thought it was better if I spent another night at their place. They were right; it was more fun! The day after, so yesterday, we had another Christmas dinner except that this time, Angela's mom cooked it so it was traditional food from Bangladesh. The currys were delicious, especially the egg one. I had never heard of it before. After the meal was over, I finally went back home with Chloé, the French TA from Connecticut who is going to spend a couple of days in Providence!
