La bataille d'Internet - The battle for Internet

Comme le temps passe vite... Aujourd'hui nous sommes le 1er septembre et cela fait presque un mois que je suis arrivée aux Etats-Unis. Ca fait en gros trois semaines que je suis à Providence. Le plus gros souci que nous avons eu durant ce laps de temps, c'est arriver à avoir une bonne connection internet à l'appartement. Laissez-moi vous expliquer...

Quand j'ai appris que j'allais vivre à Regency Plaza, j'ai tout de suite demandé à Amanda (l'assistante française de l'année dernière) si Internet était compris ou s'il fallait prendre une connexion. Elle m'a dit que c'était compris dans le loyer et qu'elles avaient aussi laissé un routeur pour nous permettre d'avoir la wifi. Parce que oui, on est peut-être en 2011, mais l'Internet qui est fourni par la résidence (somme toute haut de gamme), c'est un câble connecté à un modem qu'il faut branché à un ordinateur. Je me souviens que ce genre de connexion, on l'avait chez moi les premières années. C'était il y a bien longtemps. Mais bon, pour les premiers jours, on s'est dit que ça suffirait. Premier problème: on branche le modem dans un ordinateur: pas de connexion. Le modem ne marche pas. Je ne vous raconte pas combien de fois on a du aller se plaindre au concierge pour que l'on puisse enfin avoir un modem qui marche. Pendant ce temps, on nous dit que le routeur wifi des assistantes précédentes est quelque part avec un professeur mais où? Mystère.

Time flies... Today is the 1st of September and it's been almost a month since I arrived in the US. I've been in Providence for almost three weeks. The biggest problem we've had so far is managing to get a good Internet connection in the apartment. Let me explain...

When I first learned that I was going to live in Regency Plaza, I asked Amanda (the former French TA) if Internet was included in the rent or if we needed to get our own connection. She told me that it was included in the rent, and that they had also left a wifi router. Because even if we are in 2011, the Internet connection provided by the residence is only wired. I remember having this kind of connection when we first got Internet at home. It was a long time ago. But for the first days, it'll be okay. First problem: we connect the modem to a laptop and it's not working. No connection. You can't imagine how many times I had to go complain to the Concierge Desk so we could get a connection that worked. Meanwhile, we're told the wifi router is with one of the teachers? But who? We don't really know.

Quand le modem marche enfin, on peut se connecter avec un ordinateur. D'abord le mien, qui marche fantastiquement. Puis on essaie avec celui d'Elena mais mystère! Ca ne marche pas. On part ensuite à l'université ce jour-là. On revient, Internet marche avec l'ordinateur d'Elena mais pas avec le mien. Bon, c'est embêtant mais on se dit que le routeur va arriver et en attendant, quand je veux travailler, je marche un peu et je vais au StarBucks, où ils ont la wifi gratuite. Je peux vous dire que j'en ai goûté des cafés StarBucks ces deux dernières semaines! Et puis miracle. Une amie m'explique que si on débranche/branche le modem avant de le connecter à mon ordi, Internet devrait marcher. J'essaie et surprise! Ca fonctionne! Du coup, je peux utiliser Internet mais si Elena veut se servir de son ordinateur pour avoir une connexion après moi, il faut débranche/brancher le modem. Et pareil si je veux m'en servir après elle. C'est fastidieux mais au moins on peut toutes les deux se connecter à la maison...un ordi à la fois. Vous vous souvenez? Toujours pas de routeur.

When the modem finally decides to work, we can get a connection with a laptop. First mine, which works outsandingly. Then we try with Elena's but second mystery! It's not working. We had to go on campus tht day. When we come back, we try again. It works with Elena's laptop but not with mine anymore. Weird. It's annoying but we've been told the router should be here soon so if I need to work, I just walk five minutes to go to StarBucks and use their free wifi. I couldn't list all the drinks that I tried these past two weeks even if I tried. So many! And then... it's a miracle! A friend explains that if I unplug/plug the modem before connection it to my laptop, it should work. Indeed it does. So when I want to use my laptop after Elena, I have to unplug/plug the modem. It's the same for her if she wants to use her laptop after me. Annoying, but at least we can both get a connection at the apartment...one laptop at a time. Still no router, remember?

Et finalement, mardi dernier, on rencontre enfin le professeur d'espagnol qui a notre routeur. On rentre à la maison toutes contentes, juste pour se rendre compte que le routeur ne veut apparement pas qu'on l'installe. Il faut l'installer avec un CD mais vous savez que j'ai un netbook et donc pas de lecteur CD/DVD. On essaie avec l'ordinateur d'Elena...en vain. Et puis hier, en dernier recours, nous sommes allées à RadioShack acheter un nouveau routeur. La femme était super sympa, elle nous a tout super bien expliqué et elle nous à même fait une réduction étudiante! En plus, notre nouveau routeur est beaucoup plus joli et brilliant que celui des années précédentes. Ce que j'aime le plus avec ce routeur c'est qu'on a pu l'installer en trois étapes toutes simples. Et maintenant...on a une connexion wifi dans tout l'appartement! Je suis en ce moment assise dans ma chambre, très loin du modem, à vous raconter nos petites aventures. Y a pas à dire, Internet, c'est quand même super important de nos jours.

And finally, a couple of days ago, we meet the Spanish teacher who has our router. We come back home all happy and all, only to realize that the router doesn't want us to set it up. We need to set it up with a CD software but you know that I have a netbook and so no CD/DVD player. We try with Elena's laptop...nothing. And then, yesterday, we went to RadioShack to buy a new wifi router. The woman was super nice, she explained everything so well, and even gave us a student discount! Besides, our new router looks better and shinier than the old one. What I like about this router is that we could set it up in three short and easy steps. And now...we have a wifi connection in the whole apartment! I'm currently sitting on the floor in my bedroom, very far away from the modem, telling you everything about our little adventure. I have to say that all of this made me realize how much you couldn't do if you didn't have Internet these days.
